'River of Poppies' wall hanging

To commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, members of ‘Allsorts’ Social & Recreational Club crocheted and knitted poppies which they assembled onto a wall hanging entitled ‘River of Poppies’ which was hung in the main hall at the Civic Centre for Remembrance Day.

Mrs Heather Hartwell who organises the sessions said “The idea came from the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London some time ago. We have a wonderful exhibition here at the Civic Centre each Remembrance Day done by Mr Andrew Dewhirst relating to lads who went from Luddenden Foot to serve in both World Wars and the wall hanging was our way of remembering all those who gave so much that we may have freedom and democracy”.

The group appreciates the support of Mrs Janette Murray in helping with this project.
